The Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) is a Portland, OR based nonprofit that was founded in the late 1990s.

Since their inception, BEF has pioneered several projects to engage communities, conserve water, and help companies reduce their carbon footprints. They also offer consulting to large corporations in need of support to help them meet their sustainability goals and objectives. To use their words, the BEF are entrepreneurs for the planet.

BEF’s accomplishments are incredible. As the BEF described it:

Thanks to purchases made by our partners, we have collectively kept a combined total of more than 9.5 million metric tons of carbon from the atmosphere, generated more than 6 million-Megawatt-hours of clean energy, launched more than 250 renewable energy education projects across 20 states, restored 13.5 billion gallons of water to critically dewatered rivers and streams, and have supported the revitalization of 20 river ecosystems in 7 western states and Mexico.

Who they work with

The BEF’s client list is i-m-p-r-e-s-s-i-v-e. With partners like the NHL Green, Coca Cola, Disney and The North Face, the BEF has really made a name for itself in the sustainability consulting community. But their client list doesn’t stop at large corporations; they also work with major nonprofits, utility companies, and cities across the U.S.

“In 2011, BEF presented the NHL with an innovative opportunity to address
the League’s water footprint. Through BEF’s Water Restoration Certificates®,
we counterbalanced water usage during games for the first time in our history."
-NHL Green

Relan is a proud partner of the BEF. Here’s a snapshot of what we offset each year with the help of BEF’s programs:

This is our second year working with the BEF and we couldn’t be happier with their programs and their ability to help companies like ours stay true to our mission of reducing our impact on the planet. The carbon and water offsets we purchase allow us to continue cleaning and shipping material for our products with the environment in mind.

Reduce Your Impact with BEF’s Programs

If you’re looking to up your company’s sustainability game, chances are the BEF has something to meet your needs.

If you’re interested in education...

Consider Solar 4R Schools, an education program for K-12 teachers to help them build curriculum, lead activities, and educate our future leaders on clean and renewable energy in science, technology, engineering, and math.

If you’re interested in offsetting your footprint…

For individuals:
The Shrink Your Foot campaign is a great way to better understand your total carbon footprint and provides tips to help you reduce your impact. On the Shrink Your Foot website, you can calculate your carbon footprint and your water footprint. You can also pledge to reduce your water consumption through their Change the Course campaign to help save the Colorado River.

For businesses:
Consider investing in one of the BEF’s environmental products, which include renewable energy certificates (REC), carbon offsets, and water restoration certificates (WRC). Fun fact: The BEF created the first voluntary WRC product.

For those with large-scale projects…

The BEF offers custom solutions for larger organizations that are tackling specific challenges. Through their custom solutions offering, the BEF has helped organizations like Puget Sound Energy and Southern Oregon University conquer their sustainability goals.
