October has been a busy month for us at Relan! We’ve traveled coast to coast learning and promoting the benefits of sustainability.
To get you up to speed, here’s a wrap-up of our October projects and events.
Santa Monica College
On October 6th, 2016, Kari was invited by Victoria Charles to speak to her group of young sustainably minded students for a Recycling and Resource Management class at Santa Monica College. She was asked to discuss how Relan works with businesses to help spread the word about how they incorporate sustainability, upcycling, and resource management into their business model.
She also had the opportunity to talk one-on-one with their students to learn about their passions. These students are really at the forefront of sustainability. Their mindsets around reduction and reuse (not only recycling) are very impactful. Each student talked about the ways that they are, since taking this class, personally making changes in their own lives to reduce using resources and making it a priority to talk to others about the impact they can make as well. Simple things like getting local gas stations to stop using styrofoam cups! The student’s end of semester projects will be amazing. Ranging from the surf community to local restaurants, they will demonstrate how they can make immediate changes to positively impact the environment.
On October 11th, 2016, United Airlines released their new Eco-Skies travel products on their United Shop website. As United Airlines states in Friendly skies goes eco-friendly with travel bags “we chose to partner with Relan, a Minnesota-based company, to help mitigate our waste product as a part of our ongoing Eco-Skies commitment to sustainability.” United filmed at the Relan warehouse and created a wonderful promotional video. And when the project was featured in the Chicago Tribune, we were thrilled!
On October 12th, ReUSE MN had been eagerly waiting to launch their new database driven website for the reuse, rental and repair businesses in Minnesota. Field Guide, ReUSE MN’s marketing partner for the launch, secured the organization a spot on WCCO Mid-Morning, Minnesota’s local CBS station, the morning of the launch Jason DeRusha and Kylie Bearse. It was a great experience doing “live” TV, talking about ReUSE MN, and talking about Relan. What an amazing way to start the day of our ReUSE MN launch party at Lake Monster Brewing. Thank you to everyone who came out to help make the launch a huge success!
The 2016 ReUseConex conference was a huge success! In their fourth year, the signature event of Reuse Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing awareness of reuse through educational events, training services, and research projects, attendees traveled from around the world to join forces and show that the reuse community is strong and growing.
Starting the day on October 18th with the host city of Somerville, MA, Mayor Joe Curtatone, Kari got things rolling when she spoke as part of a guest panel regarding how reuse is impacting their city and its surrounding communities. The panel consisted of speakers from large brands like Staples, a global leader in corporate social responsibility, who spoke on how they are taking steps to change the way they look at "waste" to startup companies like BuyMeOnce, whose motto is, “let’s throw away our throwaway culture.”
The key takeaways from ReUseConex were how we can all reduce our impact on the environment by considering resources used during the production of a product, not just when it gets to the end of its life.
To round out the month, Lew Blaustein, Writing About The Intersection of Green & Sports for the Green Sports Blog, featured an article on Relan titled GSB News and Notes: Relan Grows By Upcycling Stadium Signs which showcased our involvement with the Indiana Pacers, Minnesota Wild, and United Airlines. And finally, Kari and I were interviewed for a podcast by Brian Mohr of Y Scouts, a company “founded on a simple idea: to transform how leaders and companies connect to work that matters.” It was an honor to be interviewed for their podcast and to share with their audience our mission around sustainability.
As you can see, it’s been really great month! And, stay tuned! Relan is involved in numerous upcoming sustainability and women’s entrepreneur events that include WeMN’s Ignite Your Story Conference on October 28th at St. Catherine University in St. Paul, MN.
