Lagunitas Brewing Taps into Sustainability
When you think about craft beer, you probably associate it with its unique flavor or good times that were spent at a nearby brewery with friends. What didn’t come to mind, I’m guessing, were the amount natural resources and energy it took to put that delicious malt beverage in your hands.
Craft Breweries Are On the Rise
According to the Brewers Association, more than 6,000 craft breweries operated in 2017, an increase of more than 13% from the prior year.
With the rise in the number of craft breweries, so does the consumption of their main ingredient - water. In fact, brewing beer typically consumes up to ten times the amount of water needed to produce the product.
This has more and more craft brewers looking for outside the box solutions to lower their carbon footprint, energy usage, and water consumption.
Breakthrough Technology and Breweries
Lagunitas Brewing Company is a California-based craft brewery with tap rooms located in Azusa and Petaluma, CA, as well as Chicago and Seattle. A fun and casual atmosphere where guests can order food, relax, and listen to live music, their attitude toward the environment is anything but laid-back.
Lagunitas Brewing Company uses an EcoVolt Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) a state-of-the-art filtration system that removes more than 99% of contaminants which enables the brewery to reuse its water. This saves energy by capturing wastewater and treating it on-site. With the use of the MBR, Lagunitas expects to see a 40% reduction in water.
We are in an exciting time at Lagunitas. The new brewery at Azusa and the addition of an EcoVolt solution will allow us to expand our production capacity and keep up with demand.

Finding Creative, Eco-Friendly Solutions
Looking to stand out while reducing their carbon footprint, Lagunitas Brewing saw the opportunity to upcycle their banners into gifts which they gave to members of their team so we created custom Grab and Go Tote with patchwork from their fabric CouchTrippin banners.
By upcycling their banners, they prevented adding to one of California's 128 landfills and to the 38.8 million tons of trash that Southern California alone processes each year.
Because of innovators like Lagunitas Brewing, we are excited to see how the craft beer will continue to evolve and which industries will learn from their best practices.
At Relan, we are on a mission to create a more sustainable future for generations to come. Let your creative side out because we can upcycle nearly any material you may have!
