Reef and Relan partner to repurpose 5,000 square feet of banners to create a line of sustainable bags and accessories.
The Reef Redemption, Project has partnered with Relan, manufacturer of repurposed billboards and banners, to create a line of sustainable bags and accessories using banners from the 2012 Reef Hawaiian Pro, an Association of Surfing Professionals Prime surfing competition.
The Reef Redemption, Project is Reef's commitment to employing environmentally conscious and socially responsible business practices. As one of the leading surf brands in the world offering footwear and apparel for guys, girls and kids, Reef's deep appreciation for the natural world fuels their commitment to preserving it.
This is the second year that the Southern California Company has worked with Relan to give the Reef Hawaiian Pro surf competition banners a œsecond life.
The Reef branded banners offer an opportunity to stay committed to the company's core mission while producing products that help the prestigious event live on throughout the year.
This year's banners saved 5,000 square feet of vinyl from the being moved to landfills and instead were transformed into soft-sided coolers, iPad cases, and grocery totes.
The Reef Hawaiian Pro is an annual surf competition bringing surfing fanatics from around the globe to participate in the first stop on the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. The 2012 event took place November 12-23, 2012 in Haleiwa, Hawaii, Oahu's famed North Shore. This year's winner Kauai's Sebastian Zietz, 24, has posted the first major win of his five-year pro surfing career at the REEF Hawaiian Pro to qualify for the 2013 elite ASP World Tour.
Working with Relan, Reef discovered that rather than discarding the banners at the end of the event, repurposing provided an opportunity to create new opportunities to market their premium surf travel brand and create a deeper connection with their loyal community to spur the discussion about sustainability, environmentally conscious practices and social responsibility.
Reef plans to continue working with Relan to repurpose banners on an annual basis, a decision that also creates jobs in the United States and supports the small business community.
